Born in Philadelphia in 1950, Steve McCurry studied cinema and history at Pennsylvania State University. He initially thought of producing documentaries, but he soon started to collaborate as a photographer for a local newspaper. After three years, he decided to travel to India for some months and compose his first real portfolio with images of this journey. He decided to stay for two years and, after the publication of his first important work on Afghanistan, he collaborated with some of the most prestigious magazines: Time, Life, Newsweek, Geo and National Geographic.
Sent to thousands of war fronts, from Beirut to Cambodia, from Kuwait to former Yugoslavia, to Afghanistan, Steve McCurry has always pushed himself to the edge, risking his life to witness the effect and consequences of world conflicts. A member of the Magnum agency since 1985, he is the winner of many photojournalistic awards (among which are two World Press Photo Awards) and author of the renowned reportage on the girl who became an icon of the Afghan conflict to the world on the pages of National Geographic; Steve McCurry is one of the contemporary masters of photojournalism. Every one of his portrayals contains a world of experiences, stories, emotions, pain, fears and hopes. "I have learned how to be patient. If you wait long enough, people forget about the camera and their souls start to open up to you", McCurry explains. A veteran of National Geographic, always traveling, more often than not in some part of Asia than in America, Steve McCurry has made traveling his purpose in life: "Because just the mere traveling and deepening of the knowledge of different cultures, gives me joy and an endless drive".
